How N‑able Helped PSD Net Revolutionize the Way They Work
Challenge
Before deploying N‑able products, PSD Net faced significant operational challenges, primarily related to the inefficiency of travelling to client sites for troubleshooting and maintenance.
Results
Since integrating the N‑able suite of products, PSD Net has experienced substantial improvements in efficiency and service delivery. The remote capabilities of N‑central have been particularly transformative. “I’ve saved around 50% in terms of support time, so I can now spend more time in the office,” Ian explained. The extra time has enabled PSD Net to take on more clients and larger projects without the need for additional staff.

About PSD Net
PSD Net, a break-fix service provider in the UK and N‑able partner since 2009, has been reaping in the benefits—and revenue—since integrating N‑able products such as N‑central, Passportal, and Cove. Their costs, both money and time, were high due to constantly having to travel everywhere to fix problems. Moving to a cloud-based infrastructure led to drastically improved efficiency, and a better bottom line.

Challenge
“Originally, the challenge was having to drive everywhere to fix problems,” said Ian. “This approach was time-consuming and not costeffective, especially for minor issues that required immediate attention.”
Furthermore, documentation and password management were areas that Ian felt needed improvement. “I probably wasn’t that great with paperwork and keeping a note of what I’d done,” he added. “This made it difficult to track and manage client configurations and issues effectively
Solution
In 2009, Ian was invited to an N‑able conference. “I went along, met a few people there, and signed up there and then,” he recalled. “We started off with a little server in my office, now we have N‑central hosted on Amazon.”
PSD Net chose N‑able products primarily due to their comprehensive and integrated solutions that addressed the company’s specific challenges. N‑central provided the remote monitoring and management capabilities that PSD Net needed to reduce the inefficiencies of on-site visits. It allowed them to troubleshoot and resolve issues remotely, significantly cutting down travel time and costs. “N‑central completely revolutionized things for us and made it possible to fix problems much more easily,” Ian enthused.
“On top of this, from a client’s point of view, it made things cheaper, because, although we didn’t really charge for travel, if I went to a site, I would always charge a minimum of an hour. Being able to do things remotely meant I could charge in 15-minute increments.”
For password management and documentation, PSD Net turned to Passportal. “I did consider a competing product, but at the time they had a minimum of five users. So, I looked at Passportal and they said I could have a single user, which was perfect,” says Ian. Passportal’s flexibility and ease of use made it an ideal choice for managing passwords securely and documenting client information systematically.
When N‑able introduced Cove Data Protection, its cloud-based backup solution, Ian saw it as the perfect product to replace the slower, manual local backup processes he was using. “We started off with Arcserve D2D, which was obviously local. When Cove came along, we jumped on board and upsold it to our clients,” said Ian. “This transition to Cove helped ensure faster, more reliable backups and streamlined the backup management process.”
Results
Passportal has significantly improved PSD Net’s password management and documentation processes. Ian acknowledged, “As time has gone on, I’ve become more reliant on Passportal, certainly for the saving of passwords and randomly generating a password for each site.” This improvement in documentation and security has enhanced the overall service quality and reliability offered to clients.
In addition, the adoption of Cove has streamlined the backup process, providing faster and more secure cloud-based backups. Ian notes that the shift from local backups to cloud-based backups with Cove has been well-received by clients, offering them greater peace of mind and reducing the manual intervention previously required.
Partnership
PSD Net, was established in 2002, emerging from the restructuring of a company that was originally founded by Ian Hawkins and two partners. Initially a break-fix service provider, PSD Net has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing IT landscape. As a one-man operation, Ian now manages around 300 endpoints, including 35 servers, from his office in Kent in the UK. His customers are predominantly small and rural businesses, and he gets the bulk of his new clients through word of mouth. PSD Net has been an N‑able customer since 2009, and this long-standing relationship has seen the company integrate a range of N‑able products, including N‑central, Passportal, and Cove, into its service offerings.
